The Story of Purpose Tutoring

Every student deserves a tutor who believes in them, challenges them, and helps them see what they are truly capable of. Purpose Tutoring grew out of that conviction.

Our founder, JD Hopper, was an exceptional student in high school. He graduated at the top of his class with a 4.0 unweighted GPA, completed 18 AP and dual enrollment courses, and earned 5s on every AP exam he took. From there, he attended UNC Chapel Hill, graduating from its prestigious economics program in just two years, thanks to the college credit he earned in high school.

After college, JD found himself pulled in two different directions. With strong analytical and mathematical gifts, he began his career as a risk and compliance consultant at Protiviti. But he quickly realized the work was not fulfilling, so he left to pursue his passion for investing in youth and started a childcare company, which became highly successful.

Even so, JD felt like an important part of him was being left on the table. He loved working with kids, but his analytical strengths and passion for math were largely going unused. He began looking for a way to combine his love for mathematics with his ability to connect with children and teenagers, while also building something meaningful and entrepreneurial. That journey ultimately led to the founding of Purpose Tutoring.

As he began tutoring in Charlotte, JD was blown away by the demand for truly high-quality math support. He realized it takes a rare kind of person to understand complex math deeply while also knowing how to build genuine rapport with students and create the kind of trust that leads to real growth. He also noticed that many tutoring centers miss the mark by taking a one-size-fits-all approach. JD developed a different philosophy: tailoring every session to the student, adapting to their learning style, and building a relationship strong enough to support both accountability and confidence.

As the business grew and he began hiring other tutors to work alongside him, JD also started supporting classrooms at Charlotte Latin School and Charlotte Catholic High School, expanding his impact beyond one-on-one sessions.

Today, JD feels like he is living out his purpose by using every gift he has been given, connecting with students, challenging them, and helping them grow, all while having a great time in the process.
