JD Hopper | Founder & Math Tutor
Purpose Tutoring was founded by JD Hopper, a math teacher supporting classrooms at Charlotte Latin School and Charlotte Catholic High School.
JD graduated high school with a 4.0 unweighted GPA after completing 18 AP and dual enrollment courses and earning a 5 on every AP exam he took. That academic head start helped him graduate from UNC-Chapel Hill’s rigorous economics program in two years.
JD specializes in math tutoring from early elementary through advanced calculus. His approach is centered on meeting students where they are and helping them understand the “why” behind what they’re doing, so math feels logical and empowering, not like a random set of rules to memorize.
His availability opens up as appointments become available, and spots often fill quickly. If you would like your student to work with JD, check the booking calendar on this site, and if you see an opening, it’s best to grab it soon.

Thomas Parlmer | Writing Tutor & Essay Coach
Thomas received training as a writing tutor from the Sweetland Writing Center at the University of Michigan, and went on to tutor student athletes in writing and economics. He also has experience as a literacy tutor for 5-7 year olds. For a day job he runs a software engineering consultancy. Outside of work he writes and delivers speeches, and blogs about technology, software, and culture. He believes good writing is good thinking, and loves to help students find their voice through the written word.To get started, you will fill out a brief questionnaire so Thomas can learn a bit about your student, what they are working on, and what kind of support would be most helpful. From there, if it looks like a strong fit, you will be able to move forward with scheduling based on what he currently has available. If you are hoping to begin soon, it helps to reach out earlier rather than later since his weekly tutoring bandwidth is intentionally limited.
