Writing Tutoring with Thomas Parlmer
Meet Thomas, Writing Tutor & Essay Coach
Thomas received training as a writing tutor from the Sweetland Writing Center at the University of Michigan, and went on to tutor student athletes in writing and economics. He also has experience as a literacy tutor for 5-7 year olds. For a day job he runs a software engineering consultancy. Outside of work he writes and delivers speeches, and blogs about software and culture. He believes good writing is good thinking, and loves to help students find their voice through the written word.
To get started, you will fill out a brief questionnaire so Thomas can learn a bit about your student, what they are working on, and what kind of support would be most helpful. From there, if it looks like a strong fit, you will be able to move forward with scheduling based on what he currently has available. If you are hoping to begin soon, it helps to reach out earlier rather than later since his weekly tutoring bandwidth is intentionally limited.
If you would like to get a feel for Thomas’ style before you schedule, you can take a look at a few samples of his work. He writes clearly and thoughtfully, and his pieces are a good reflection of how he helps students: starting with strong ideas, shaping them into a clean structure, and refining the language until the writing actually says what the student means.
You can read one of his sample essays, and watch a short speech he wrote and delivered:
