JD Hopper is a quintessential entrepreneur based in Charlotte, North Carolina. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in two years, thanks to his incredible success taking college classes as a high school student. Upon graduating, he landed his dream job as a financial consultant for a prestigious firm, but quickly realized it wasn't for him, and walked away. Just 26 days later, he was thrust into a journey of discovering what made him happy and what work truly fulfilled him.
He very quickly took a liking to childcare and developed a passion for it, beginning that work full-time with a part-time tutoring practice on the side. Slowly but surely, his tutoring practice grew, and he decided to make it his full-time pursuit. That's when he founded Purpose Tutoring, a solo tutoring practice in Charlotte, North Carolina specializing in SAT, ACT, and college admissions prep, as well as K-12 math, science, English, and history.
He was so good at it, and parents were so happy with him, that his network grew rapidly. Pretty soon, everyone wanted JD as their kid's tutor. It got to the point where he could no longer take on every client by himself, so he began hiring other tutors. Drawing on an enormous alumni network from Chapel Hill, he brought on some of his most accomplished classmates, individuals with outstanding qualifications and tutoring experience, and onboarded them as Purpose Tutoring educators. As the team grew, so did the company's reach, expanding from Charlotte to a nationwide operation. His success with Purpose Tutoring is a textbook example of how pursuing what you love can turn into extraordinary success.
And he wanted to share that message. Public speaking was always something JD had a natural knack for, and he set out to develop that gift with intention. After about a year as a member of Queen City Toastmasters, his competence grew at a remarkable pace, and he became one of the most beloved members of the club. It felt only natural that he would run for club president at the next election cycle, and so he did. He was elected the youngest president in the club's 72-year history.
Even his most fervent advocates couldn't have predicted the extraordinary success that would follow. Under his leadership, the club grew rapidly, reaching the highest active membership count in its history and officially becoming the largest public speaking organization not just in Charlotte, but in all of the Carolinas, making Queen City Toastmasters an absolute powerhouse.
When competition season arrived, the club achieved unprecedented success, winning championships in both major contests: the impromptu speaking competition and the prepared speaking competition. They claimed first place at the club level, area level, division level, and district level, the highest level of competition, outlasting 87 other clubs.
As his term came to a close, it was clear that JD had built something truly special at Queen City Toastmasters. That experience only deepened his desire to make public speaking a bigger part of his brand. He began giving speeches on a professional level, sharing his story as an entrepreneur and delivering messages of success, inspiration, passion, and motivation. He now speaks at conferences, workshops, and lectures, makes guest appearances, and much more. He is an energetic, fervent, and articulate public speaker with a true gift for storytelling, and he never leaves an audience without leaving them inspired.
These days, JD spends most of his time running and managing Purpose Tutoring, while staying active in his own tutoring practice and continuing to give speeches. In his free time, he is deeply invested in his community, serving as a Big Brother in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program and leading in the children's ministry at his church, Covenant Presbyterian Church.
JD Hopper is a man driven by purpose in everything he does. It is the throughline of his life. And if his story tells you anything, it is that when you commit fully to what you were made to do, there is no ceiling on what you can build.
